My 30th Birthday

Thirty! Back in June I turned another decade older. Sheesh. Hopefully I am a bit wiser but like most birthdays I still feel the same as always. I have noticed as I am getting older that my face is getting more fine wrinkles and I am getting a "mommy frown" line between my brows that I am not happy about. Clearly I need to work on that. Or see a dermatologist!

The day of my birthday was really busy. Phil was working in the ER that month and I believe we both worked that day, I know I did. So a full day at work with a nice birthday lunch with the office, then I came home to find the sweetest cake that Kara and the kids made for me. I am sure the kids just loved helping because as soon as I walked in the door they assaulted me with their enthusiasm and news of cake. It was cute. Kara was already gone since Phil arrived home first to relieve her. Thanks Kara!

We decided on an impromptu and rare dinner out as a family and after some driving around we settled on Fuddrucker's for a burger. It was a great choice for our family since the kids were crazy and we didn't have to worry too much about their boisterous nature. Phil and I wolfed down our burgers amid the demands of three kids hopped up on soda and then we went back to our van. We had to eat quickly since I had mutual to attend that evening. Once in the car we received the horrible text from a friend that their son had a drowning accident and was in the hospital. Phil and I were devastated for them and their family stayed on our minds and hearts the rest of that week. He has since made a miraculous recovery and is just as he was before, a healthy, lovely 3 year old.

We returned home to do cake for the kids. I took a bite or two and rushed off to mutual.

We had a really good activity focusing on the Savior and virtue and at the end the sweet girls and leaders surprised me with cupcakes. It was such a busy day but full of thoughtful texts and messages of love from family and friends. And with the busyness of our life it was as good as it was going to get! Here's to 30!

4th of July 2013

We kept it very low-key and last minute this year. Seems like everyone else had plans or was out of town and we were on our own. Luckily our friends Brent and Terina were home and were willing to join us for some last minute fun. We swam and BBQ'd at the pool and then came home for some toddler friendly fireworks courtesy of the Maldonado's. I didn't want to keep our kids up until 10 to sit in the heat and they don't know any better so this was perfect for them.

The following pictures are pretty much the same but I love the evolution of Rhett's face in them. He goes from apprehension to pure amazement.

The night ended with sparklers and hovering parents.

During the evening I looked over to see Rhett and Maizy sitting near the porch. Maizy was just minding her own, busy eating rocks. I love how Rhett recognizes that she is smaller than him, he sat down next to her and started tickling her legs.

Haha! And clearly Maizy has her priorities down. Rocks! Cute kids. It was a simple and fun evening.

10 on 10: July 2013

One photo, every hour, for 10 hours

Our morning starts the same way; I wake with either my alarm clock at 5:30am to get ready for work or this little man wakes me. He is still in his crib and requires assistance to get out, that is where Max comes in.
The boys share a room now and Max will come and tell me that Rhett is awake.

 photo 10on10july_0007copy_zpsd433ea2b.jpg

Phil stays up late studying or decompressing with a movie and thus he buries himself deeper into bed so he can sleep a bit longer. Usually until I hassle him awake, sic the kids on him or he has somewhere to be.

 photo 10on10july_0004copy_zpsd1defb46.jpg

Our monthly toy purge. Not really, but it seems like it. I get fed up with the constant battle of keeping a tidy house and I go through our books and toys and sell, toss or donate what has seen better days or the kids don't play with anymore. Kate often laments that we "have too many toys!" when I nag them to pick up. I know Kate, I know.

 photo 10on10july_0009copy_zps9e09bbc3.jpg

While I purge and organize the kids run and ride circles around me.

We stop to refuel.

 photo 10on10july_0014copy_zps39f13181.jpg

I carry on with my organizing and rehang pictures in Kate's new room. We moved her to Rhett's room after we were tired of all the fighting and late night partying that Max and Kate were doing. I quite like her cute and happy space. She has the most put together room in the entire house. Bonus for being able to reuse the nursery decor! It actually goes perfectly with her bedding. She will be solo until the baby comes and the babe is old enough to sleep through the night. Then we will most likely get bunk beds for the boys, they will move to this room and Kate and the baby will move to the bigger bedroom. All in good time. We may not even be in this house when that all goes down.

Naps for the kids and I rest for a bit reading through the Ensign. Sleep overtakes me and Phil urges me to go lay down.

1pm-2pm: Sleeping for all

After naps and Phil leaves to study we head out into the miserable weather and try to cool down with the slip n' slide and otter pops. The kids succeed while I just melt sitting in the shade. I finally call it after 30 minutes and we head indoors. Their bickering doesn't help either.

 photo 10on10july_0020copy_zps39eeca68.jpg

Pre-dinner snack for me: beautifully ripe peach, drizzled with honey and cinnamon and a bit of cream. Apples for the kids.

 photo 10on10july_0021copy_zps66b546bd.jpg

I prep dinner and the kids play on starfall.com. Here they are laughing hysterically at the number 6, where a bee comes and buzzes at them. They played this page at least six times. It is nice that Max and Kate can do it all on their own and it frees up some time for me to work alone.

 photo 10on10july_0023copy_zps3d5cb5de.jpg

Dinner is done and we continue to play. The kids zoom like crazy people back and forth. It is loud and chaotic most times in our house. I can't wait for bedtime.

Overwhelmed

I had every intention of sitting down one or two nights and hammering out these posts to get caught up. And then life happens; Phil has a week of day shifts and we actually can hang out at night, or I am too darn tired to sit and filter through images and compile thoughts, or the house is a mess and I have to work the next day and maintain some shred of dignity and tidy up before Kara the fabulous babysitter comes over, or...

Maybe I just need to settle for one post a week. Maybe. No promises.
______________________________________________________

There is no witty way to say this.

I am pregnant.

The 5th and FINAL baby arrives the first week of January 2014.

 photo ultrasound_zps02321ad9.jpg

I know. We're crazy.

You know how some people in the blogging arena have a theme or word for their year? Like "focus", "breathe", "peace", etc. Mine is overwhelmed. And by all accounts I am doing fabulously on fulfilling that theme! (Phil says I am too sarcastic, sorry if that is too biting.)

As the shock and stress of adding another baby to our family has begun to fade I am very grateful that I can have more children. I don't take it for granted and know that we are blessed. But I still feel incredibly overwhelmed that this will be our 4th child in just over 4 years. Ahhhhh! If you had asked me about another baby a few months ago I would have laughed and sworn it off for another year or two before I started to consider trying to get pregnant, when Rhett was approaching 3 years old. And yet here we are. Apparently we are on the 2 year plan. :)

I am 13 weeks presently and for the first time EVER I have been nauseous and feeling yucky. My hopeful reasoning is that this baby is a girl. All of my prior pregnancies have had boys in them and I have never felt nauseous with them. I would love for Kate to have a sister but of course will be happy with either gender. The sickness has since lessened and most days now I feel pretty good other than general fatigue. As of last night heartburn reared it's ugly head, so early! I am also feeling that general unease of my stomach and digestion woes that plague most pregnant woman. Bleh. My consolation prize is the baby at the end and knowing that this is the last time I will be doing this.

I also have felt this little peanut move already. So fun! This is my favorite part of pregnancy and what I will miss the most.

So there you have it. One of the primary reasons I have fallen off the face of the earth as my dear friend Liz put it. That and the three other little people that call the shots around here. I can do hard things, I can do hard things...

10 on 10: June 2013

One photo, every hour, for 10 hours

Our morning started off very typical. The family all awake but only Phil was showered and ready for the day. He was leaving early to go study before his shift in the emergency room that evening.
    photo 6am10on10_zps945b9253.jpg

And then it all went downhill from there. The kids and I were meeting friends later in the morning and I was getting ready for the day. I was in my bathroom putting on make-up with the kids running in and out as they do. I heard a loud bump and then the sound of increasing water pressure. I had started a load of laundry earlier and didn't really give this new sound much thought, other than that the washer must be rinsing and one of the kids used the potty at the same time, thus the increase in water pressure. I went about my business and a few minutes later left my room in the back of the house.

I rounded the corner into the hallway and all hell broke loose. There was over an inch of water making it's way down the hall. I ran down the hall and into the laundry room where I was confronted with heavy spray of water pumping out of the back of the washer. It was steadily making it's into both kids' bedrooms, into the hall closets, the hall bathroom and beyond. I freaked out, rushed to the washer and found that I couldn't do anything there to stop it. I screamed aloud in frustration all the while I had three kids on my heels peppering me with questions.

I ran out to the front yard to turn off the water main. Um, yeah. I wasn't quite sure where the water main to the house was. I ran to the end of the driveway and lifted up the city grate where the water meter is kept and found nothing. I yelled out in frustration/near tears again and sprinted over to Kendra's house, my neighbor. Luckily she was home and I pounded on her door. She answered, I breathlessly asked where the water main was and she enlightened me. Bless her heart! She also followed me home and went into super girl mode and helped me. I turned off the water. (Right by the front door, dummy!)

With the water finally turned off I was able to survey the damage.

This occurred on Monday, June 10th. The night before Phil and I had moved the washer to capture a gross cockroach that had snuck in. For the past year I have had a 2x4 board set atop the washer and dryer. It was my intention to paint and mount it with brackets above the washer and dryer to create more storage. I had gotten as far as buying the supplies... Ahem.

So, this board has been sitting on top just fine, holding soap and whatnot. Well when we moved the washer we didn't put it back in the same position where it was stable. The next morning when I started a load of laundry I thought nothing of our move the night before. When the washer went into the spin cycle the momentum and movement caused the board to fall back and shear off the water inlet valve, where the hose connects to the washer. Thus the great flood occurred. And it was all our fault. (Or my fault if you ask Phil).

The thing is, I was getting ready to leave the house for several hours. What if I had just started the washer as I was walking out the door? What if the kids weren't interrupting me constantly as I readied for the day and we were able to leave a few minutes earlier? At the rate that water was pumping out of the hose then we surely would have been financially ruined. I would have returned to an entire house full of standing water. The water would have reached our computer and back up drives that house the pictorial lives of our children.

 photo 8am10on10_zpse59a4a76.jpg

Standing water in both kids' bedrooms, steadily creeping further into their rooms.

 photo flood_zpsbdf53ab4.jpg

Water poured out of the laundry room door and crept along the length of the outer wall of the house.

 photo flood2_zps0b8e8b07.jpg

Kendra and I grabbed every towel in the house and mopped up the water best we could. I called several neighbors and ward members to locate a shop vac. While I picked that up Kendra continued to mop up the mess. And watch my kids. She is amazing.

I called Phil to tell him the grim news. At this point we had no idea how bad the water damage was and when I told him what had happened the poor man pretty much started hyperventilating on the phone. I could hear his voice break and the stress and worry. He hurried home and sprang into action. As he walked throughout the back of the house we quietly talked and expressed our worst fears that this was going to break us financially. I quickly called the home owner's insurance company and tried to ascertain what type of coverage we actually had. When I read our policy all I could find was 3 pages of what they do NOT cover with water damage. It was all Greek to me!

I called 3 or 4 times and left a message for an agent to call me back. They did and I was relieved to hear that they did cover the damage after our $1000 deductible. The agent told me to survey the damage, save receipts and see if the actual damage was more than our deductible. We were hopeful that we were only going to need to replace the carpet, that we had caught the water before it was able to soak into the walls.

 photo 9am10on10_zps5e468cf1.jpg

Phil got right to work ripping the soaked carpet and pad out of both bedrooms.

Our beloved Saint Kendra corralled the kids while I was on the phone with the insurance, shopped for carpet, etc. She was amazing that day. So selfless when she had work to do and a life. They love her more than me anyway. :)

 photo 11am10on10_zps978b5387.jpg

Our house was a wreck, it smelled musty, the kids were displaced and Phil and I were stressed and grumpy.

I shopped for carpet and a new washer part.

 photo 12pm10on10_zps514ed883.jpg

I fund an ad on Craigslist for cheap carpet. We wanted something affordable but didn't want crap that wouldn't stand up to the kids and our potential living here for another 5 years if we land residency here. I hit the jackpot because the guy I called was an actual flooring company, he was selling remnants. I headed down to the store and looked at the inventory. Granted the selection was small but I was able to score a fabulous piece of carpet for $1/sq. foot! He showed me this same carpet in his showroom and it was selling for over $7/sq. foot. Or yard, whatever. Either way it was really great carpet. I walked out of there with enough carpet for the 2 rooms and the highest level of pad for just over $300. We had a guy in our ward install the carpet for us and for a total $500 we were well below our insurance deductible.

 photo 2pm10on10_zpsd9357d05.jpg photo 5pm10on10_zpsfdf81b1f.jpg

Two days later, I went to work at 6:45am leaving my house still in crap mode. Phil stayed home to study aka work on the house and when I came home at 5:30 I walked into a put together home, freshly vacuumed beautiful carpet and some happy kids. They love their new "rug" and now that the carpet fumes have dissipated we are actually rather happy with the way this all turned out.

 photo finished_zps8ddf1561.jpg

At the end of that day, when Phil and I had a moment away from the children, he expressed that he had started the day feeling the weight of the world on his shoulders. He left the house incredibly stressed with school and then when I called him I only dumped more upon him. But now he said "I feel incredibly blessed."

Now or Never

Alright blog. It is time. Either catch up and keep truckin' or shut it down. I don't want to shut it down so it is time to get crackin' again. How many terrible metaphors can I use? Not even sure metaphor is the correct word. ANYWAY. Moving on!

Since I dropped off the face of the earth, (again with the metaphor! Pun?) we have celebrated Father's Day, my 30th birthday (eeeps!), had a minor flood in our home, made a big purchase and have a life changing event in the works. Woooohooo! Living the dream over at the Gunnell's!

And I like to keep things in order around here, naturally I feel that each event deserves it's own post. So I'd better get busy.

Oh Brother!

Where do I even begin? I certainly did not intend to take a month long hiatus but life has happened. Even now I have been staring at the blogger dashboard for a good 10 minutes, not feeling the blogging love. I want to but I don't want to. I've become lazy.

But let's power through this...

Brief recap of the past month:

Phil finished his 3rd year of medical school and is officially a senior! Wahoo! We are slowly inching closer to the graduation milestone. This time next year he will be Dr. Gunnell, we will have matched into a residency (fingers crossed!) and on our way to the next phase of training. Phil has settled on psychiatry and that will be a 4-year residency. We are excited about his decision and feel it will give us the best work-life balance that he is presently working his tail off for.

I am still working with Dr. Dickerson, one day/week and have been picking up temp jobs here and there for a few offices that call me. It works out well and it is a nice break from the kids. But on the weeks that I work 3 days I am always glad to just stay home and be a mom. Props to full-time working mamas!

*******

I just wasted an hour perusing other blogs, checking Facebook and generally wasting time. Meh. I'm not feeling it right now. Heading to bed.
